Liam Rosenior had just taken his press conference ahead of Chelsea’s game against Arsenal this Sunday, the first in a series of huge games against Champions League contenders which will define this season’s success.
His reply to a question about how important it was that his team finish in the Champions League showed a glimpse of fire, and perhaps of insecurity as the new coach defended his record.
“This club should be in the Champions League, this club is a Champions League club,” the manager said.
“When I took over, we were eighth. We’re now in the race,” he bristled.

Unfortunately for Rosenior, after dropping points against Leeds and Hull, his team’s Champions League chances have taken a huge blow. He’s right that his team have climbed from 8th to 5th on his watch, but that doesn’t tell the full story. They also have the hardest run-in of any side in the league, and may just have fumbled their best chances to finish in the top 5.
Meanwhile, the chasing pack have closed in. There are games against almost all of the top teams still to come – this could still go in any direction, and the manager will have more than enough chance to prove his quality before May.

Rosenior also spoke about the club’s injury situation, with a key attacking option set to miss out this weekend.
