Marcel Desailly has opened up and recommended Al Hilal striker Darwin Nunez to Chelsea, amid the latest reports which have claimed the former Liverpool striker wants a move back to European Football.
The Uruguayan international, who left Anfield in the summer, is said to have emerged as a potential attacking solution for the two clubs as they look to reinforce their forward lines ahead of next season.
Núñez endured an inconsistent spell at Liverpool after joining from Benfica in 2022, producing flashes of explosive quality but struggling for sustained form in Jürgen Klopp’s system.
Despite a respectable goal return across all competitions, the club opted to reshape its attacking unit, leading to his exit. His performances since leaving England — marked by improved finishing and renewed confidence — have now reportedly placed him back on the radar of top-flight sides seeking a powerful, versatile forward
‘I would actually recommend Núñez for CHELSEA. He’s a very good player, a smart player – he just needs the right environment to perform,’ Desailly said.
‘When Liverpool identified his potential they knew what they had statistically. But when you start on a bad note, the confidence disappears and the consideration from those around you follows.
‘It’s like Dennis Bergkamp going to Inter Milan – things went completely wrong. Or Roberto Carlos in his early days, shooting the ball into the stands. The confidence wasn’t there.
‘That’s what happened to Núñez at Liverpool. But the quality is still there.’
IcChelseanews Says…
While the Uruguayan forward offers raw pace and relentless energy, his inconsistent finishing and erratic decision-making would only magnify issues already present in Chelsea’s attack. The club needs efficiency, not volatility.
Núñez’s Premier League record shows flashes of brilliance but also long stretches of wastefulness—an expensive risk for a side striving for stability. His tendency to drift wide and disrupt positional structure could also clash with Chelsea’s attempts to build a more disciplined, possession-based system.
With the squad crying out for a clinical, composed presence rather than another high-variance forward,
CHELSEA would be wiser to invest in a striker with proven reliability. In short, Núñez’s potential remains enticing, but his profile does not match the precision Chelsea’s project now demands.
