Chelsea and England receive a workload warning for Cole Palmer ahead of World Cup 2026. That is the news receiving everyone’s attention as the season enters a decisive stretch. The club ambitions are on the line and a global tournament is approaching as well. Now, serious questions are being raised about how much is too much for the England star.
PFA Chief Raises Concern Over Cole Palmer Workload
The head of the Professional Footballers’ Association, Maheta Molango, has recently caught everyone’s attention. As per reports, Molango has openly warned Chelsea that Cole Palmer is facing ‘burnout’ if his current workrate continues. It is a clear concern built on what he has seen up close.
Palmer’s rise has been electric at Stamford Bridge. Last season, he carried a heavy load across domestic and European football. He then featured at the European Championship and later the Club World Cup as well.
Now, the Blues are pushing hard for Champions League qualification. So, he is again expected to be central to everything good the team shows. With that, Molango did not hold back on this. He explained the tough cycle top players now have to deal with. He said:
“For us the concern is, of course, player welfare because for me when I look at someone like Cole Palmer. Cole Palmer could go if he goes to the World Cup three consecutive summers without a break.
“To go for a 10-week window with the national team and then within four days be expected to be in the US to play the Club World Cup that finishes on the 14th of July to then be back within two weeks for training. I was at the training camp when Chelsea came back, they were shattered.”

Those comments suggest more than just tired legs. It hints at mental and physical fatigue. It highlights the thin line between peak form and serious injury. Molango has even visited the Blues’ training base and believes the risk is real. This is not just for Palmer but for several top players affected due to a packed schedule.
Champions League Push Adds Pressure At Chelsea
Chelsea’s situation only makes the situation harder. The Premier League club is fighting to secure a return to Europe’s top table. In that environment, resting your most creative star is a risk few managers are willing to take.
Meanwhile, Palmer has made 19 appearances this season. Although, injuries have interrupted his rhythm. When fit, he is often the spark as he produces decisive moments. Taking him out of the starting eleven during a key run of games could surely test Chelsea’s attacking edge.
However, pushing him too far could cost more in the long term as well. Muscle injuries often strike when proper rest is ignored. A short-term advantage for the club can become a long-term issue for the World Cup. That is the balance the west London side must now manage carefully.
The PFA’s official has also shown empathy for players at the top level. He understands that Palmer earns huge wages at Stamford Bridge. But, money does not protect a body from fitness problems. Across Europe, stars are getting injured more frequently. The fixture list keeps expanding and the recovery windows keep shrinking.
England Selection Doubts Ahead Of World Cup 2026
Beyond club duty, the star midfielder has commitments with England as well. Palmer has yet to feature under Thomas Tuchel due to ongoing injury concerns.
Competition for the No.10 role is tough in the national camp. Phil Foden, Eberechi Eze, Morgan Rogers, and Jude Bellingham are all fighting for that creative role. If Palmer misses key spells through injury or fatigue, he risks slipping down the pecking order. For him to make the World Cup squad in 2026, he needs consistency and fitness.
