Trent Kone-Doherty transfer confirmed as Liverpool agree buy-back clause

Winger Trent Kone-Doherty has left Liverpool on a permanent transfer, joining Norwegian side Molde FK in a deal worth €750,000 along with various clauses.

Kone-Doherty had entered the final six months of his contract at Liverpool and, despite the club offering a new long-term deal, the 19-year-old opted to consider his options.

That has led the Irishman to join Eliteserien side Molde FK in a permanent deal worth €750,000 (£658,000) – a sizeable profit on the £150,000 paid to sign him from Derry City in 2022.

Liverpool have also negotiated buy-back and sell-on clauses which could stand to benefit the club in the future – and may even see Kone-Doherty return to Anfield if he develops as hoped.

His decision to leave Liverpool comes after just under four years on the books, having found himself behind the likes of Rio Ngumoha and Kieran Morrison in the first-team pecking order.

The club are also understood to be clearing the pathway for 15-year-old talent Josh Abe, who has been offered a scholarship deal amid interest from a number of clubs including Arsenal, Chelsea and Man City.

Kone-Doherty made two appearances for Liverpool’s senior side including off the bench in the 3-0 loss to Crystal Palace in the Carabao Cup in October.

But unlike Ngumoha and more recently Morrison he has not been a regular presence in first-team training or on matchdays, with it clear that he did not feature prominently in Arne Slot’s plans beyond emergency rotation in the cups.

He leaves Liverpool having set a new appearance record in the UEFA Youth League and established himself as one of the most exciting talents in the academy.

His explosive brand of wide play, typically as a left winger, will be a huge asset to Molde, who begin their new campaign with a cup clash with Champions League side Bodo/Glimt on Saturday, March 7.

They secured a deal for Kone-Doherty outside of the English transfer window as clubs in Norway are still able to conduct business until April 1 due to their different schedule.

Molde will kick off the new Eliteserien season at home to Rosenborg on March 14, which could provide a realistic opportunity for their new signing – who has penned a four-year contract.

“It’s the perfect club for me to come to,” Kone-Doherty said on completing his switch to Norway. “I like the project I’ve been presented with here and I’m really excited to get started.”

All the best, Trent!
