Liverpool are among the clubs linked with the Gremio youngster.
Liverpool have been linked with a move for a Brazilian teenager.
According to Portal do Gremista, the Reds have shown an interest in Gabriel Mec. The 17-year-old has made six appearances for Gremio this season. He primarily operates as an attacking midfielder but is capable of playing on each flank.
It is suggested that Liverpool are ‘closely monitoring the situation’ and may make an offer in the next transfer window. Portuguese outfits Benfica and Sporting CP are also said to be keen, along with Shakhtar Donetsk. Gabriel’s agent has reportedly already met with Benfica.
According to Gremio head coach Luis Castro, Gabriel - capped nine times for Brazil under-17s - could start in Sunday’s derby against Internacional. Castro said: “I trust him. He's a versatile, fast player who plays well between the lines. He's still developing, still growing, and we have to be very careful with him so as not to destroy what has been built up to this point.”
Gabriel has already turned down a move to Ukrainian giants Shakhtar in the past. He said: “To be honest, Grêmio’s board accepted the proposal. They tried to talk to us, but I spoke with my family, with the people who manage my career, my agent, and we felt it was better not to go.”
“It is a very good club, one that develops players and gives opportunities. Still, we thought it was better not to go now. I still have the dream of playing more for Grêmio. I can help this club a lot.
“The future depends on the present. If I keep getting good results and working properly, clubs will keep watching. I am very focused on Grêmio. I want to make my history here. I have been at the club since I was nine years old.”
Along with Gabriel, Liverpool have been linked with another young Brazilian. Allan Elias is said to be on the Reds’ radar.
Liverpool are prepared to sign young talent if they believe they can make a difference in the long term. In January, the Reds agreed to purchase Jeremy Jacquet from Rennes for up to £60 million, with that deal being activated in the summer.
