The Colts could add a threat off the EDGE

The Indianapolis Colts‘ defense improved under new defensive coordinator Lou Anarumo, recording 39 sacks in the 2025 season, compared to slightly fewer 36 sacks under former DC Gus Bradley.

Now entering year 2 under Anarumo and free agency/NFL Draft right around the corner, the Colts can begin adding some more weapons on the defensive front.

ESPN’s Aaron Schatz released his perfect fit signings for all 32 teams in the league this upcoming free agency, naming EDGE rusher Bradley Chubb as a perfect fit for Indianapolis.

“The Colts ranked just 30th in pass rush win rate (29.1%) last season, and three of their top four pass rushers are hitting free agency. So, this is a good time to bring in a veteran,” Schatz wrote.

“The [Miami] Dolphins cut Chubb to clear money off their salary cap, but he is still just 30 years old. He had 8.5 sacks last season with 36 pressures.”

Colts GM Talks Adding D-Line Help

Aaron Schatz has the same sentiment as Indianapolis Colts general manager Chris Ballard when it comes to prioritizing the offensive line, but in a different manner.

Ballard was asked at the 2026 NFL Scouting Combine which position Indy will focus on to get younger and better. Here’s what he said:

“The front 7, we’ve had some pretty good players here. Like speed on defense we gotta get faster on Defense and we really have to on the front 7… The draft we think is good on the defensive side of the football especially in the front 7. But it’s a definite area we need to address.”

Bradley Chubb has almost identical numbers to Colts EDGE rusher Laiatu Latu, with both pass rushers recording 8.5 sacks and just a couple off for the same amount of tackles.

While the former Miami Dolphin is not younger than other options in the draft and free agency, he can still compete at a high level and would be a good complement to Latu if paired in Indianapolis.

The next highest sack numbers on Indy’s roster all had 4 sacks, so adding a Pro Bowl-level pass rush can help the other gems in the Indianapolis Colts defensive line. Chubb has recorded 7.5 or more sacks in five of his seven played seasons.

Money Restrictions

While Bradley Chubb pairing up with the Indianapolis Colts D-linemen Laiatu Latu and DeForest Buckner would make the defense scarier, the team may go another direction to retain two key members of the offense.

The Colts are in the middle of trying to bring back quarterback Daniel Jones, who was on a one-year deal, and wide receiver Alec Pierce, who was in the last year of his rookie contract, with GM Chris Ballard mentioning that both talks are heading in the right direction.

Both players will cost Indy a huge portion of the salary cap, even with the $20 million increase for the 2026 offseason, making it hard to get Chubb on the roster.

If the former Miami Dolphin EDGE rusher were to take a team-friendly, but attractive contract offer, then the Colts should be prepared to pull out all the stops to bring him.
