The Green Bay Packers are making a fresh start in the top chain of command of their special teams.
After the resignation of Rich Bisaccia, the NFC North Division franchise has found a man to succeed him, with Rob Demovsky of ESPN reporting that Green Bay has hired Supe Bowl champion Cam Achord to be their new special teams coordinator.
Via Demovsky:
The 39-year-old will replace Rich Bisaccia, who unexpectedly stepped down 10 days ago after four seasons with the Packers. The 65-year-old Bisaccia’s resignation came more than a month after last season ended and caught the organization by surprise, according to general manager Brian Gutekunst.
Packers hire Super Bowl champion Achord
Achord won a Super Bowl as a special teams coordinator for the New England Patriots in the 2019 NFL season, when Tom Brady and company defeated Sean McVay’s Los Angeles Rams at Super Bowl LIII.
After his stint with the Pats ended, he went to the New York Giants and served the role of an assistant special teams coach. His tenure with the Giants did not continue following the team’s hiring of new head coach John Harbaugh.
Achord’s stint with the Patriots was also his first in the NFL. Before that, he had been a part of the coaching staffs of Southern Miss and Southwest Mississippi.
With Achord coming aboard in Green Bay, he becomes the fourth special teams coordinator in the Matt LaFleur era. The expectation will be high on Achord’s ability to address the Packers’ inconsistency in the special teams group that ultimately played a huge role in Bisaccia’s exit.
Others who were interviewed for the role were Devin Fitzsimmons of the Seattle Seahawks, Tom McMahon of the Las Vegas Raiders, Sam Sewell of the Arizona Cardinals, and Kyle Wilber of the New Orleans Saints.
