Performance-based bonuses are common in the NFL, especially for veteran players coming off injuries or down seasons. The bonuses offer teams financial flexibility while giving players a chance to maximize earnings if they hit certain milestones. For wide receiver Sterling Shepard of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, his bonus seemed within reach at the start of the season.

As things unfolded, however, that was not the case. While Shepard contributed in stretches and provided leadership in the locker room, he was unable to generate the sustained numbers necessary to trigger either bonus clause. Yet he still got paid.

It is practically unheard of for players who don’t meet the terms of performance bonuses to then receive them. That is why this action taken by the Tampa Bay Buccaneers has analysts wondering what is going on off the field. Here’s what you should know about the Bucs’ bizarre decision.

Sterling Shepard Failed to Meet Two Benchmarks for the Incentive Bonus

When the Tampa Bay Buccaneers signed wide receiver Sterling Shepard, the move was viewed as a low-risk, incentive-heavy deal designed to add depth and veteran reliability to the offense. As part of his contract, Shepard had the opportunity to earn a $500,000 performance bonus tied to two statistical benchmarks.

However, despite flashes of productivity during the season, he ultimately fell short of both goals, leaving that half-million-dollar incentive on the table. In Shepard’s case, the incentives were reportedly tied to achievable but meaningful production marks – all of which were benchmarks that would have required him to remain healthy and consistently involved in Tampa Bay’s passing attack. That proved to be the challenge.

Shepard’s Career in The NFL Has Had a Recurring Storyline

Even minor setbacks can derail incentive opportunities, particularly when benchmarks are cumulative over a 17-game schedule. Any missed time – or playing limited snaps – reduces the chances to reach reception totals, yardage marks, and/or touchdown numbers written into contracts.

Inactivity has been a recurring theme in Sterling Shepard’s NFL career. Even though Shepard entered the season looking to carve out a significant role in a crowded wide receiver room, his availability was once again an issue in the storyline repeating throughout his career. Ultimately, he was inactive for the last four games of the season and, as a result, did not meet the benchmarks for his performance-based bonus.

Cool move by the Bucs — receiver Sterling Shepard was inactive the last four games as other WRs got healthy, and finished one catch and 29 yards short of $125,000 incentives as a result. Team paid out both, and an additional $250k for $500k as a separate bonus.

Shepard’s bonus terms were designed as incentives to meet specific requirements totaling the half-million-dollar payout. The terms were to reach 400 receiving yards for $125,000 and then he’d receive another $125,000 if he increased his receiving yards to 500, and the same with catches – $125,000 for 40 catches with an additional incentive of $125,000 if Shepard could increase that number to 50 catches. But the WR wrapped up the season with only 371 yard and 39 yards, thus failing to earn his performance-based bonus. But the Bucs still gave Shepard the full $500,000 in a gesture of goodwill.
