Chelsea’s latest financial results do not make happy reading.
According to UEFA, the club lost £355m for 2024-25, the highest annual loss ever made by an English football club, and the second highest in European history, following the £484m Barcelona lost in 2021.
Although there are various reasons for this, the bottom-line is that their overall revenue is significantly lower than their main Premier League rivals.
At the same time, UEFA estimates states that Chelsea’s playing squad is the most expensively assembled in football history, costing £1.52bn.
Now there are fears that in order to balance the books and to avoid further sanctions from Europe;s governing body, there might need to be some major outgoings in the summer.
After a substantial fine last summer for breaching spending rules, they remain under UEFA scrutiny. And they could face further fines as part of the settlement should they continue to not be compliant, and even the threat of exclusion from European competitions altogether.
