It seemed like it was just yesterday that analysts and journalists alike praised quarterback Anthony Richardson Sr. and what he did at the 2023 NFL Scouting Combine. An impressive 40-yard dash (4.43 seconds), vertical jump (40.5 inches), and broad jump (10 ‘9) seemed to give him a solid chance to start.
After a few impressive starts in 2023, Richardson took over full-time in 2024 and disappointed. In 11 games, he completed a league worst 47.7% of his passes for 1,814 yards to go along with eight touchdowns and 12 interceptions. In 2025, he fractured an orbital bone that was sustained in pregame warmups and was pretty much lost for the year. Currently, he is seeking a new team after the Indianapolis Colts permitted him to seek a trade.
A career that was once so promising is now uncertain, leading to the question of whether he will get the chance to start again.
#### Cons that Make it Hard for Richardson Sr to Start

Indianapolis Colts quarterback Anthony Richardson (5) throws a pass Sunday, Oct. 5, 2025, during a game against the Las Vegas Raiders at Lucas Oil Stadium in Indianapolis. The Colts defeated the Raiders 40-6.
Completing passes and being accurate have been a problem for Richardson as he holds a career of 50.6%. In 2024 alone, he had a horrid rate of 47.7%, which ranked dead last in the NFL.
Film analysis and coaches have noted that his footwork was often ‘jagged’. In addition to that, his narrow base has often led to him throwing inaccurate passes and interceptions at a high rate.
While he does have elite arm strength, he has struggled to make the ‘lay-up’ throw. These passes are high percentage and lead to big plays. Many quarterbacks like Caleb Williams, Cam Ward, and even Michael Penix Jr. have had issues with short completions and there is still time for that issue to be fixed.
Richardson entered the NFL with very little college experience. This could have led to the multiple ‘growing pains’ as his career progresses. His ‘tap out’ due to fatigue in 2024 grabbed attention not just from coaches, but from the media. This has put a dent in his leadership.
#### Pros for Richardson Sr Making a Comeback to Start
At this moment, some teams are still in need of a quarterback. The Minnesota Vikings are one option. Head coach Kevin O’Connell has long admired Richardson’s traits and could develop him alongside quarterback J.J. McCarthy.
The Atlanta Falcons are another place that is looking for a new quarterback. Penix Jr.’s injury setbacks and inconsistencies can put him on the hot seat. Backup quarterback Kirk Cousins will likely be leaving the team as well. This can lead to a dramatic quarterback competition.
Richardson remains one of the most athletic quarterbacks to enter the league. He still holds some impressive records from his days in the 2023 NFL combine. This includes his arm strength and rushing of the football. In 15 starts, he has accumulated ten rushing touchdowns.
Because his trade value has decreased, he is cheap to add to a roster. His new team would only inherit about $1.1 million in salary in 2026. He technically has one year left on his rookie deal, giving a team a chance to evaluate him before deciding if he is worth the fifth-year option.
