Cowboys receive troubling warning following George Pickens' decision

While the Dallas Cowboys could still sign star wide receiver George Pickens to a long-term contract this offseason, they made the immediate decision to place the non-exclusive franchise tag on him — a move that was widely expected, despite some lingering uncertainty.

Any long-term extension would need to be finalized by the July 15 deadline. If a deal isn’t reached, Pickens would play next season on a one-year, fully guaranteed $20 million contract under the tag.

That scenario could open the door to potential drama in Dallas. NFL Network insider Ian Rapoport raised legitimate concerns, noting he believes Pickens might not report to the team facility unless a long-term deal is in place.

“Essentially the thinking is this for the Dallas Cowboys — they made one of the best trades of the offseason last year, sending a third-round pick for Pickens. They just can’t let him go, considering the way he and CeeDee Lamb worked together and how he ignites that offense,” Rapoport said.

“Now it is on them to try and work out a long-term deal. I do not expect to see Pickens in the facility unless and until there is a long-term deal, so don’t expect him to sign the tag yet. I would also wonder if there is another team that would want to give a premium draft pick and sign Pickens to a long-term extension themselves, trying to pry him from the Cowboys.”

Any concerns about unnecessary drama surrounding Pickens didn’t appear to be shared by Cowboys owner Jerry Jones, who revealed he spoke with Pickens after the decision and expressed excitement about his future in Dallas.

“I told him how excited we are that he was going to have the future with the Cowboys,” Jones said of the call, “that he was very deserving because in and of itself it’s a very significant attaboy relative to where we thought we would be [when we traded for him]. It was a privilege to be able to, frankly, let him know that he was going to have certainly that kind of interest from us.

“I expressed to him how valuable a part of the team that we think he is — I think he is. The kind of contribution he can make, he’ll continue to get better working with Dak Prescott, working with the other receivers. We talked about the future. We both reiterated how good it was for him to be here, and know that what we have in place assures that he will be here.”
