Heading into the 2026 NFL offseason, there are few free agents receiving more hype than Green Bay Packers quarterback Malik Willis.
After spending the last two seasons with the Packers, Willis is expected to land a lucrative contract this offseason in free agency. Some reports have suggested that he could get a deal worth up to around $30 million.
Willis was acquired by Green Bay in a trade with the Tennessee Titans for a seventh-round pick. In each of the last two years with the Packers, he has been called upon to play as the backup behind Jordan Love.
During his first season with Green Bay in 2024, Willis played in seven total games. He completed 74.1 percent of his pass attempts for 550 yards, three touchdowns, and no interceptions, while also running for 138 yards and a score.
Last season, Willis produced great numbers once again. He threw for 422 yards, three touchdowns, and no interceptions, while also completing 85.7 percent of his passes. He chipped in with 123 yards and two touchdowns on the ground.
All of that being said, Willis has received an intriguing new free agency prediction with the offseason getting underway.
Green Bay Packers Predicted to Lose Malik Willis to AFC Contender
Fox Sports analyst Henry McKenna has named the Pittsburgh Steelers as the new home for Willis next season.
“There’s no better fit for Willis than in Pittsburgh. That’s largely because of the combination of DK Metcalf, Jaylen Warren and Mike McCarthy. It would be a nice core to build around. But it’s also clearly not enough. The Steelers need to keep investing in their roster, which coach Mike Tomlin elevated into playoff contention every year,” McKenna wrote.
“There just wasn’t enough for Rodgers to work with last year. Willis’ dual-threat skills could upgrade the unit — even before they add more talent at the OL and playmaker spots. But that shouldn’t stop them from filling in an offensive unit that looked threadbare during Metcalf’s absences.”
Willis landing with the Steelers would be a perfect fit. He would have a great opportunity to be the long-term quarterback for one of the most historic franchises in the NFL.
If Aaron Rodgers chooses to leave Pittsburgh, it would not be surprising to see the team willing to spend big to replace him. Willis would be the best option to be that guy.
The Packers Will Need to Replace Malik Willis
There is a nearly zero percent chance that Willis will be back in Green Bay next season. Assuming that ends up being the case, the Packers will need to replace him.
A few options have already been suggested for Green Bay.
Making a trade with the Indianapolis Colts for Anthony Richardson could be one option. Brian Gutekunst could also turn to the NFL Draft for a replacement. Or, he could choose to sign a quarterback in free agency.
It will be interesting to see where Willis ends up this offseason. Pittsburgh is a serious team to keep an eye on. Wherever he goes, the Packers are going to miss him.
