Saints 'perfect' free agent signing would be Packers 21-touchdown wide receiver

The New Orleans Saints have solved the two biggest question marks already. They have a head coach in Kellen Moore, and more importantly, they have a quarterback in Tyler Shough.

With Shough in place, the goal this offseason is very clear: the Saints must improve the offense around him. While running back and interior offensive lineman could be nice, the Saints need another wide receiver to pair with Chris Olave.

The Saints' "perfect" free agent signing to fill that need, according to Bleacher Report's Alex Ballentine, is 25-year-old Green Bay Packers receiver Romeo Doubs.

Saints 'perfect' free agent signing would be Romeo Doubs

"Romeo Doubs should be looking for a place where he can play a bigger role in free agency," Ballentine writes. "The Saints should be looking for a reliable No. 2 who can play alongside Chris Olave. It's a hand-in-glove fit."

Doubs would be a fantastic addition next to Olave. While Doubs doesn't have the downfield explosiveness that a receiver like Alec Pierce has, he's a very consistent receiving threat.

This past season, Doubs had 724 yards and six touchdowns on 55 receptions. The year prior, he had 601 yards and four touchdowns on 46 receptions. In 2023, he put up 674 yards and eight touchdowns on 59 receptions. In his rookie year, he had 425 yards and three touchdowns on 42 catches.

Across his four-year NFL career, all with the Packers, Doubs has 2,424 receiving yards, 21 touchdowns, and 202 receptions on 320 targets.

While those aren't eye-catching numbers, the more important issue for the Saints isn't finding a superstar wide receiver. It's finding a solid option to play alongside Olave in the Saints offense.

Spending high draft capital on a top receiver wouldn't be a bad idea, but the Saints could instead elect to spend some money on Doubs in free agency and build a very stable offense around Shough.

And signing Doubs wouldn't take them out of the draft market for a receiver. Devaughn Vele is a nice receiver, but he's better suited as a third or fourth option.

If the Saints could create a WR room of Olave, Doubs, Vele, and a top rookie receiver in Round 1 or 2, then the Saints offense around Shough would be in a fantastic spot for his sophomore season.

Doubs would be a great addition for the Saints, and Ballentine calling him the "perfect" free agent signing for the Saints makes a ton of sense.
