The Kansas City Chiefs are entering the 2026 NFL Draft with the No. 9 pick, the highest pick they’ve had since 2013. After a 6-11 season that fell well short of expectations, the Chiefs are looking to re-tool at positions that were exposed in 2025.

Wide receiver was a position that was left exposed in 2025 for Kansas City; not for lack of depth, but rather the lack of a top-end talent for Patrick Mahomes to throw to. Marquise Brown, Rashee Rice, Xavier Worthy, and Tyquan Thornton all had between 400-600 yards, but none truly showed themselves to be game breakers.

So, that’s where Kansas City will be looking to improve this offseason, and it might come in the NFL Draft.

Jordyn Tyson Meets With Chiefs at Combine

The NFL Draft combine is underway in Indianapolis, Indiana, and the Chiefs have been doing their homework on the deep wide receiver class.

At the top of that list is Arizona State wideout Jordyn Tyson, who is the top ranked WR in this class, just ahead of Ohio State’s Carnell Tate. The Chiefs met with Tyson at the combine, and Tyson shared some details from that meeting when he met with the media.

“It was cool, I got to meet Eric Bieniemy, that was really, really cool,” Tyson said. “They’re definitely a little old school, I’ll say that — which is not a bad thing, it’s a great thing actually.”

True old school mentalities in the NFL are pretty few and far between in the day and age of young and fresh coaches like Sean McVay, Mike Macdonald, Mike McDaniel — you get the idea.

With Andy Reid still commanding the Chiefs, there’s no doubt in anyone’s mind that Kansas City can quickly regroup and put together a strong rebound season. Maybe it’ll be with Jordyn Tyson on the outside, catching passes from Mahomes.

Tyson Projected to be Picked in Top 10

Depending on which mock draft you are looking at, Tyson may be gone before the Chiefs pick at No. 9. His overall rank amongst the class is No. 9, but a few teams ahead of Kansas City may be looking to take a receiver, so they may reach to get Tyson.

So this leaves a couple of options for the Chiefs: option one would just be to live and let go if Tyson goes before the Chiefs pick. It’s a very deep WR class, with four guys ranked within the top 20; they’d more than likely be able to get Carnell Tate at No. 9 if Tyson does leave the board early.

Option two would be to scout out who else may be interested in Tyson and figure out if a trade is possible. This is a super risky play, because the Chiefs would probably have to give up more than that pick would be worth and Tate is graded the same as Tyson. But, if the Chiefs love the scheme fit, it could be a risk worth taking.

The first round of the 2026 NFL Draft will take place on Thursday, April. 23 in Pittsburgh.
