In an excerpt from his new book, Young Man in a Hurry: A Memoir of Discovery, California Governor Gavin Newsom recounts his awkward first meeting with Trump in 2018. The highlighted event occurred aboard Marine One, the presidential helicopter, during the President’s first term in office.
Besides discussing the recent wildfires in his state at the time, Newsom says he and the President also enjoyed a weird conversation about his eldest daughter, Ivanka. The governor remembers Trump ruing the daughter’s missed opportunity to get into a romantic relationship with Brady. Perhaps the weirdest part of the story was that Trump fumed about the miss while his son-in-law, Jared Kushner, was sitting right next to him.
The tale dates back to Brady’s single days and is set at a function attended by the two of them. The president claims Brady asked him for Ivanka’s number, and he gave it to him. Brady later called Ivanka and left a message, but she never returned the call.
On hearing about the snub from Brady, Trump asked his daughter what was going on. As Gavinrecalls, Trump fuming about the incident:
“Trump to Gavin: “I said, ‘Jesus, you know, Tom Brady. What the hell is going on? Why aren’t you calling this guy back?’ And she tells me, ‘Oh, I’m in love.’ ‘What do you mean you’re in love?’ And that’s when she mentions ‘this guy’.”
