Taylen Green shattered two Combine records held by Anthony Richardson just days after the Indianapolis Colts made the quarterback available for trade.

The Colts surprised everyone on draft night three years ago when they selected Richardson with the fourth overall pick in the 2023 draft class. Richardson was incredibly raw - he made just 13 college starts - but the AFC East franchise moved for him in the NFL Draft following his exceptional Combine showing.

Richardson put up impressive marks in the vertical and broad jump, setting Combine records for quarterbacks at 40.5” and 10’9”. But his ability as a passer never matched his athleticism, while he also struggled to stay healthy before landing on the trade block earlier this week.

Now, Richardson’s name is no longer alongside those Combine records. On Saturday in Indianapolis, Arkansas quarterback Green excelled and snatched both marks.

He first recorded a 11’2” broad jump before shattering Richardson’s vertical with a 43.5” leap - the same height coveted linebacker prospect Sonny Styles reached on Thursday. Green’s effort crushed Richardson’s record, topping it by three full inches.

Standing 6’6”, Green - whose former Arkansas teammate Mike Washington burst into tears following his 40-yard dash - threw for 2,714 yards and 19 touchdowns while throwing 11 interceptions on a 60.7 percent completion rate last season. He also rushed for 777 yards and eight touchdowns. However, Arkansas went 2-10 and endured a difficult season. Green’s play was subpar, and Richardson provides a cautionary tale.

Just four games into his rookie season, Richardson was made the Colts starter. He impressed originally, using his legs effectively before suffering an injury that ended his season.

In his sophomore campaign, Richardson struggled to complete short passes as his throws were all over the place until he was benched. Year 3 then came and went, with Daniel Jones beating out Richardson as the starter in preseason - and even when Jones went down, Richardson wasn’t available, leading the franchise to call upon a healthy Philip Rivers to come out of retirement.

Ultimately, Richardson has thrown more interceptions than touchdowns through the first three years of his career. The Colts seem to be very open to moving on from Richardson, with Riley Leonard stepping in as the backup to Jones after faring well in his limited cameo roles last year.

Although no fault of his own, another mark against Richardson is the availability issues he has dealt with in the NFL. He has sustained a number of injuries across his first three years, and was unavailable to step in when Jones went down with his torn Achilles because Richardson sustained a freak injury; a resistance band struck his face, fracturing his orbital bone.

Green won’t go anywhere near the first round, but his athleticism means he could land on a roster as a gadget guy in the mould of Taysom Hill.
