Chelsea will be a club to watch out for in the next summer transfer window.
Chelsea are often at the centre of transfer window headlines and the early signs suggest that may be the case once again this summer, as the Blues target major arrivals in several positions in the hope of transforming Liam Rosenior’s side.
The west London outfit retain a good chance of qualifying for the Champions League this season and appear to be in a four-horse race for the final three spots with Manchester United, Liverpool and Aston Villa – assuming Premier League clubs are given five places in the competition, as currently looks strongly likely.
No matter where the Blues end up, it is no secret that their ownership will want to invest in the playing squad this summer – having taken over the club in 2022, BlueCo will demand that a serious Premier League title challenge is around the corner. Additions are reportedly being considered in positions such as at goalkeeper, in central defence and in the midfield – but one further big-money signing could be crucial.
Is there still a striker problem at Chelsea?
Chelsea are the joint-third highest goalscorers in the Premier League at present, and so that department has not necessarily been viewed as one where the Blues have been dropping points this season. The reality, though, is that they still have some work to do if they are to match the record in front of goal of the top two. Neither of Arsenal or City have been consistently prolific, either, meaning there is a clear opportunity to usurp both clubs in the goalscoring department with some smart transfer business this summer.
The Blues signed two strikers in the last summer window, but Liam Delap has flattered to deceive amidst injury issues and Joao Pedro at times appears more comfortable playing in the No.10 position. Pedro’s 14 goals in all competitions are nothing to be sniffed at but Chelsea’s next top scorer, midfielder Enzo Fernandez, has scored five of his 11 goals from the penalty spot. Delap has scored just two goals in 25 appearances.
To bring in a world-class striker would be a marginal gain necessary in order to truly push to win the biggest honours domestically and in Europe. With rumours already suggesting Delap could depart Stamford Bridge, the perfect time for Chelsea to bring in a new No.9 could be this summer.
Chelsea could launch stunning move for Julian Alvarez
According to reports by TEAMtalk last weekend, Chelsea and Arsenal are both ‘pushing Barcelona hard’ in the race for Julian Alvarez, receiving ‘weekly updates’ from Atletico Madrid on the availability of the striker.
The 26-year-old is thought to be unsettled at Atletico and while Barca are understood to be his ideal destination, the former Manchester City star is believed to be open to a return to the Premier League, specifically in a headline move to London. The Madrid giants are said to be demanding a price tag of more than £100million for their prize asset.
Alvarez has scored 13 times this season in a fairly lean campaign by his standards, but bagged 29 goals for Atletico last season and registered 11 league goals and 10 assists in his final season with City while playing second fiddle to Erling Haaland. The Argentine is proven at the very highest level and would elevate almost any side in world football at present.
Moreover, at just 26 he has won almost everything there is to win in the game, and this experience would prove invaluable in a youthful Chelsea side. Alvarez is in his prime years with the experience of winning the World Cup, the Champions League and more to call upon – and he could score the goals necessary to fire the Blues towards era-defining success of their own.
