Slot reveals Liverpool set piece success key

**Arne Slot has revealed the key to Liverpool’s renewed set-piece success.**

Saturday’s [5-2 win over West Ham](https://www.clickliverpool.com/sport/liverpool-fc/63971-liverpool-5-2-west-ham-three-talking-points-mohamed-salah-cody-gakpo-hugo-ekitike/) saw the Premier League champions score three first-half goals from corners to extend their prolific streak with the tactic.

The efforts from Hugo Ekitike, Virgil van Dijk and Alexis Mac Allister took the Reds’ consecutive domestic tally to seven non-penalty set piece goals.

Since the turn of the calendar year, no team has amassed more set piece goals than the nine from Slot’s side, who now have 11 in all competitions.

Liverpool’s transformation from the league’s worst team from set pieces to its most productive coincided with December’s departure of coach Aaron Briggs.

But Slot believes his team’s improvement is down to stripping back to basics.

He said: “The first half of the season almost every set piece we conceded went in.

“We start scoring from set pieces and things start looking brighter and better than when you don’t.

“We have created quite a lot of chances in the first half of the season that too many times did not go in.

“Maybe one or two small details have changed defensively and offensively; our set-up is slightly different.

“But the biggest reason is that things go back to normal.”

The Liverpool head coach also admitted that Florian Wirtz is unlikely to return from a back problem in time for next week’s double header against Wolves.

Wirtz was [a late withdrawal in the warm-up](https://www.clickliverpool.com/sport/liverpool-fc/63886-liverpool-dealt-late-blow-for-forest-clash-florian-wirtz/) before last weekend’s win over Nottingham Forest and is a doubt for two trips to Molineux in just four days.

“Sometimes with an injury things can develop in a positive or a negative way,” added Slot.

“Now, we are thinking it doesn’t have to take too long but Tuesday will probably be too early.

“But the week after will be tight as things stand now. I thought he would be available for today as well, which didn’t happen, of course.”
