The Minnesota Vikings are reportedly preparing a major move at quarterback this offseason, with growing internal pressure to address last season’s disappointing performance from rookie starter J.J. McCarthy.
According to ESPN’s Kevin Seifert, the Vikings expect to “take a big swing” at the position — and one name gaining traction is retired quarterback Derek Carr, who could be lured back to the NFL as a veteran bridge or starter option.

Minnesota Vikings Eyeing Big Swing at Retired QB Derek Carr: NFL Trade & Free Agency Buzz Builds After J.J. McCarthy Struggles
McCarthy, the former Michigan star and 2024 first-round pick, began 2025 as the Week 1 starter but struggled with consistency and health. In 10 starts, he completed 57.6% of his passes for 1,632 yards, threw 11 touchdowns against 12 interceptions, and posted a passer rating of 72.6.
Those numbers failed to inspire confidence that he is the long-term answer. He missed time due to injury, and the Vikings finished outside the playoffs despite high expectations.
Seifert noted the mounting pressure inside the building to correct what many now view as a mistake from last offseason:
“If anything, these events increase the chances that the Vikings will take a big swing at finding a veteran quarterback who could start in 2026.”
While McCarthy is still only 23 and has limited NFL starts, the Vikings appear unwilling to wait for full development without competition or a proven backup plan.

Carr, who retired after the 2024-25 season following stints with the Raiders, Saints, and others, has been linked to several teams looking for veteran stability. At 34, he brings experience (over 40,000 career passing yards, multiple Pro Bowl nods) and familiarity with winning organizations.
A return to the NFL — especially in a low-pressure bridge role — could appeal if the Vikings offer a competitive deal.
Other veteran QB options (e.g., Kirk Cousins, Russell Wilson) have also been mentioned in Minnesota rumors, but Carr’s name has gained particular traction in recent reports.
