Police arrested former Oklahoma running back and longtime NFL standout Adrian Peterson in Minnesota Friday morning on charges of fourth-degree driving while impaired, according to Hennepin County Sheriff's online records. Peterson, who attended the Minnesota Vikings' public draft party at U.S. Bank Stadium Thursday night, was booked into jail at 5:15 a.m. after a Minnesota State Patrol trooper stopped his Audi Q5 for speeding, according to KARE11 in Minneapolis.
Peterson was released on a $4,000 bond at 7:31 a.m. and scheduled for a court date May 9 in Minneapolis for the misdemeanor charge, per the report.
The trooper clocked the vehicle allegedly drive by Peterson at 83 mph in a 55 mph zone around 3:20 a.m. on Highway 77 in Richfield, a suburb of Minneapolis.
Peterson faced legal issues throughout his NFL career. In 2014, he was indicted for felony child abuse after allegedly disciplining his son with a switch, leading to a suspension for much of the 2014 NFL season. Peterson pleaded no contest to a misdemeanor charge and was reinstated in 2015. In 2016, he was involved in a lawsuit after a car accident in Houston, though it was settled out of court.
Peterson did not officially retire from the NFL, but has not played since the 2021 season in limited action with the Seattle Seahawks and Tennessee Titans. Peterson spent the 2020 season with the Detroit Lions, playing in all 16 games while rushing for 604 yards and seven touchdowns. Peterson ranks No. 5 all-time in the NFL for rushing yards (14,918) and No. 4 all-time in rushing touchdowns (120).
Peterson was a standout at Oklahoma, earning first-team All-Big 12 honors during all three years with the Sooners from 2004 to 2006. As a freshman in 2004, he was named Big 12 Offensive Freshman of the Year, Big 12 Offensive Newcomer of the Year and an All-American after rushing for over 1,900 yards, helping Oklahoma reach the national title game. Peterson followed that with two more 1,000-yard rushing seasons in 2005 and 2006.
Peterson rated as a five-star prospect coming out of Palestine (Texas) in the 2004 class, according to the industry-generated 247Sports Composite. He ranked as the No. 1 overall recruit in that class and signed with Oklahoma over additional known offers from Arkansas, Miami, Texas, Texas A&M, UCLA and USC.
