It took only 13 minutes to see the biggest positive of Liverpool's strange win over West Ham - opinion

Jeremie Frimpong only needed 13 minutes during Liverpool’s 5-2 win over West Ham to re-announce himself at Anfield.

The Dutchman has had a stop-start debut season with the Reds, with Saturday’s match just his 20th appearance.

However, he was brilliant before a hamstring injury ruled him out for a month at the end of January, and in a somewhat lifeless Liverpool display on Sunday, he showed his class once again.

Change my mind: Frimpong is now Liverpool’s best right winger

He did more in 13 minutes vs West Ham than Salah did all game 😶

Coming in for Joe Gomez at right-back in the 77th minute, Frimpong immediately offered the Reds the pacey outlet they had been missing on the right-hand side. Having forced an Axel Disasi own goal, the 25-year-old now has to stay in the team.

Frimpong provides a pace injection for Liverpool

Strangely given the handsome nature of the scoreline, there were not all that many positives for Liverpool on Saturday.

Hugo Ekitike played well, but the Frenchman aside, it was an error-strewn performance from Arne Slot’s team, with many players frustratingly sloppy.

Unlike recent games where he has had nowhere to turn, though, Slot was able to shake things up by bringing a genuine threat off the bench in Frimpong. Having that outlet again would have been positive no matter how the No. 30 had played.

But that he came in and showed no ill effects of his time away was simply brilliant. Tiring West Ham legs could not deal with Frimpong as he demonstrated exactly what Liverpool have been missing.

Struggling Salah can feel the benefit

If Frimpong’s cameo was lively and exciting on Saturday, then Mohamed Salah’s showing was the antithesis. The Egyptian made it 10 Premier League matches without a goal in predictably drab fashion.

There must now be a conversation over whether Frimpong should start ahead of Salah on the Liverpool right, but even if Slot decides to persist with his flagging veteran, having such pace behind him at right-back will be a big help regardless.

Did anyone actually deserve man of the match against West Ham? 😆

If so, who was it?

As fast and threatening as he is, Frimpong demands attention from opposition full-backs. That should free up some much-needed space for Salah to finally do some damage.

The two have shown signs of linking up well in Frimpong’s limited game time this season, and despite Salah’s struggles on Saturday there were some further signs of that against West Ham.

So, whether it is at right wing or right-back, Liverpool’s flying Dutchman can be a huge help between now and the end of the season.

It has been a frustrating year for him so far, but Saturday felt like Frimpong sending a reminder of the quality Liverpool have missed in 2025/26. Having some of it back feels like a huge step in the right direction.
