Josh Abe: Liverpool academy prodigy suffers season-ending injury on England duty

Liverpool’s talented young prospect Josh Abe has suffered a serious injury while representing England, ending his season prematurely.

The 15-year-old winger is highly-regarded at the academy and made a notable impression when called up to the U18s squad this season, scoring eight goals and assisting three in 10 appearances.

However, his season has been cut short after he sustained a serious injury while on England U16s duty, with Abe confirming the news himself on his Instagram account.

“Tough one to take having my season cut short, but everything happens for a reason,” he penned on a picture showing him receiving treatment on the pitch after the injury.

Abe had been in Turkiye with former academy coach Barry Lewtas as England’s U16s played games against Denmark, Spain and France at the end of February.

It is an untimely blow for the teenager after making an impression in what is a decisive season for him as he attracts interest from rival clubs.

With Liverpool yet to tie Abe down to a scholarship deal, which is the only contract available at his age, the club face the prospect of losing him in the summer.

Man City, Arsenal and Chelsea are among those interested, with the 15-year-old’s representatives at Tyler Alexander-Arnold’s PLG agency free to negotiate after June 1.

The Reds remain in talks to ensure they keep one of their brightest talents at the club, though an offer has already been made regarding his scholarship.

Abe, who has been at the club since he was four, has already trained with Arne Slot‘s squad at times this season as the club seemingly looked to go on the charm offensive.

That is no longer available to them after his injury, but their efforts to convince Abe there is a clear pathway for him will continue.
