Hugo Ekitike may be flourishing in his first season as a Liverpool player, but that doesn’t mean he is happy with his goal return.
The Frenchman has been the most successful of the Reds’ summer signings, catching the eye with his attacking quality, but also his personality off the pitch.
Ekitike made it 16 goals for the season in Liverpool’s 5-2 victory over West Ham on Saturday, ending a four-game run without finding the net.
Speaking to LFCTV, the 23-year-old provided an honest assessment of his season, saying he would like his goal tally to be higher.

“To be honest, I could score more. I’m not that happy,” Ekitike said.
“But it’s not even goals, it’s assists as well. Today I think I gave one or two assists, I don’t remember.
“As long as I can help the team and be involved, that’s the most important. I want to win, so personally I’m happy, but I’m looking forward to the upcoming games.”

Ekitike continued to dissect his game with brutal honesty, saying he demands improvements in his all-round play, echoing Slot’s pre-match comments that he was driven to develop further.
“Obviously, I can improve. I could score in the last games, I had chances,” he added.
“I have to keep working. I want to be the best version of myself to help the team more because I could help more.
“But it’s always about lessons and getting better, so I will try in the coming games to be even better, to score more and be involved more.”

In some ways, it is nice to see Ekitike be so hard on himself, showing that he has high standards at Liverpool.
But this has been an excellent first season for him, considering he has 16 goals in 37 appearances – and six assists – in a side that has struggled.
Ekitike has been one of the biggest positives for the Reds this season, scoring consistently, showing class in the rest of his game and becoming a fan favourite.
At 23, his best years are still a long way ahead of him, and he has all the tools to develop into a world-class striker.
