The Borussia Dortmund defender has been stalling over signing a new contract with his club.
Liverpool’s interest in defender Nico Shlotterbeck dates back as far as October when DaveOCKOP exclusively revealed that Liverpool have made contact with the player’s representatives to understand the details of any potential deal being struck.
The defender’s current contract expires in 2027 but with interest growing in acquiring the player, Borussia Dortmund have looked to extend Nico Shlotterbeck’s contract and give him better terms.
The German international continues to stall over this decision however, and the club are bracing themselves for a potential sale this summer as they would prefer that than him leaving for free.
Having said that, the actions of Nico Shlotterbeck during his side’s 3-2 loss to Bayern Munich yesterday hinted at a conclusion coming to this saga very soon.
The defender opened the scoring in the game and BILD have reported that his heartfelt jubilation after breaking the deadlock may have sent a signal to his club about what he wants to do next.
“Anyone who jumps so carefree over the boards to the fans after scoring a goal and make a heart shape with their hands can’t really say: Thank you and goodbye in a month!”
“But somehow, you get the feeling he’s about to make a commitment to his contract. It seems BVB would be open to discussing a release clause if Bayern Munich were to come calling one day.”
There is a feeling that Nico Shlotterbeck will be a man in demand come this summer with Real Madrid and Liverpool’s interest in him very well documented.
Now add the Bundesliga’s strongest team to the mix in Bayern Munich and this could be a very interesting battle this summer if Borussia Dortmund give up hope of tying him down to a contract extension.
