New Vikings rumors are disastrous news for J.J. McCarthy's future in Minnesota

According to a new report, J.J. McCarty tenure as the Minnesota Vikings' starter may not last much longer.

Essentially Sports' Tony Pauline reports that the consensus at the combine is the Vikings are in the market for a new starting quarterback and not just someone to push McCarthy.

Adding to that, Pauline is hearing from a source that the team is "really down" on the Michigan product and "is ready to move on" from him in 2026.

"The consensus opinion here at the Combine is that the Vikings are in the market for a new starting quarterback," he reported. "In fact, a source tells me the team is really down on quarterback J.J. McCarthy and is ready to move on from their 2024 first-round pick. The team will bring in another signal caller to compete and eventually replace McCarthy."

This isn't the first time we've seen a reporter suggest the Vikings could move on from McCarthy.

Early last month, ESPN's Kevin Seifert reported that, based on what he's hearing from sources, "all bets are off" when it comes to McCarthy's future in Minnesota following the firing of former general manager Kwesi Adofo-Mensah.

"The best way to put this, based on what sources have said, is that all bets are off. The general manager who drafted McCarthy No. 10 in 2024 has been fired, and the coach who was in full agreement with that decision is now under considerably more scrutiny," Seifert reported.

"If anything, these events increase the chances that the Vikings will take a big swing at finding a veteran quarterback who could start in 2026," he added. "The only thing more damaging than making the mistakes the Vikings made last season would be to repeat them this year."

It's not surprising that the Vikings are considering jumping off the McCarthy wagon this season. After all, he was bad in 2025 and was the biggest reason the team missed the playoffs.

And, as Seifert points out, head coach Kevin O'Connell has an increased sense of urgency to make sure that doesn't happen again, which will only make the Vikings more determined to bring in someone who could replace the young signal-caller.
