“When teams show what they can do” – Alexis Mac Allister’s message for top 5 run-in

Alexis Mac Allister is hopeful that Liverpool can deliver during the business end of the season, having gained some momentum.

The Premier League champions made it four wins in a row on Saturday, beating West Ham 5-2 at Anfield and going within three points of third-place Aston Villa.

Liverpool are starting to click when it matters, following a dire spell earlier in the campaign, losing only two of their last 21 matches in all competitions.

Mac Allister has now scored two goals in as many matches, and speaking on BBC Match of the Day, he was confident that the Reds are peaking at the right time.

“The last four or five months is when teams show what they can do,” Mac Allister said.

“That’s what we want. We know how important it is to qualify for the Champions League for the club and us as a team.

“The goal is there and we are going to do everything to qualify and be closer to the teams on top.”

Mac Allister also focused on the importance of Liverpool continuing their momentum as the season goes on, aided by their title win last year.

“Now that we spend some time together, things are easier for us, we understand each other,” he added.

“The last four or five months is when teams show what they can do. That’s what we want.

“We know how important it is to qualify for the Champions League for the club and us as a team. The goal is there and we are going to do everything to qualify and be closer to the teams on top.

“The gap is smaller with Aston Villa and all the teams on top. We are really happy with the result and we need to keep improving.”

Premier League race for top five: Where Liverpool stand

Mac Allister’s bullishness is justified, with Liverpool enjoying a positive fortnight in the battle for Champions League football.

They are only three points adrift of a Villa side losing momentum, so third place has to be seen as a realistic target.

That said, Man United are arguably the narrow favourites to finish there, not least because no European football allows them a week off between games.

They look a different force under Michael Carrick, even though it may be a short-term honeymoon period, and the trip to Old Trafford in early May will be huge.

Chelsea are also in the mix, but are capable of dropping sloppy points, and they are the outsiders to finish in the top five.

Fifth place is expected to be enough for Liverpool to qualify for the Champions League thanks to the performance of English clubs this season, but they have to be aiming higher than that.

Slot’s side still have to face Man United (A), Chelsea (H) and Aston Villa (A) in the final weeks of the campaign, fixtures that will prove decisive for their European targets.
