Defense was the biggest reason as to why the Dallas Cowboys could not get anywhere near the postseason in 2025. Since then, Jerry Jones has replaced Matt Eberflus with Christian Parker in order to fix their woes on the defensive side of the field. Obviously, they still need more stars on defense to step up and Coach Brian Schottenheimer knows exactly who it will be — Shavon Revel.
Why Dallas believes so much in the second-year cornerback
Versatility is the name of the game when it comes to defensive players in the NFL. Revel shows exactly that. He was fielded in seven games and had a great display of defensive prowess despite limited minutes. The Cowboys got 35 combined tackles with 23 of those being solo takedowns alongside three passes defended and a tackle for loss.
Revel's development will be the main focus of the Cowboys in the offseason. Coach Schottenheimer gushed with a lot of confidence when it came to the 24-year-old's development, via Joseph Hoyt of The Dallas Morning News.
"Von’s going to take a big step this year. Finally healthy, finally feeling good. We’ve got talented guys that need to be developed. That’s part of our job. We’re not just in this business of ‘OK, we’re gonna go draft players.’ We’re going to have a very specific improvement plan with a plan of action for all those guys," the Cowboys head coach said.
Notably, Revel's season was cut short due to a concussion that he suffered when the Cowboys faced the Washington Commanders on Christmas. His time to assimilate with the defensive schemes in Dallas were also not enough by that time. However, Jones noted that there is truly something special in the cornerback out of the East Carolina Pirates that make them believe in him so much.
"Revel is a really young, raw guy. He didn’t get to play a lot last year because of his injury. Parker really liked him coming out, too, so he’s already got one project on his hands that he thinks a lot of, we think a lot of. We think the upside and the ability to be a really good football player in this league is there. We’ve got some good coaches to bring those guys along," the Cowboys owner declared.
If these statements stand the test of 10 months, the Cowboys have someone special in their roster that will lead the defense to a Super Bowl win for the first time in 30 years. Will Parker, Schottenheimer, and Jones be able to mold him into the superstar they say he will be?
