Boston Celtics Announce Roster Move Before 76ers Game

On Sunday night, the Boston Celtics will play the Philadelphia 76ers (at home) in Massachusetts.

The Celtics are coming off a huge 148-111 victory over the Brooklyn Nets.

Jaylen Brown led the way with 28 points and nine assists while shooting 9/12 from the field in 30 minutes of playing time.

Before Sunday’s game, the Celtics announced a roster move.

The Celtics wrote: “We have signed John Tonje to a two-way contract ☘️”

Keith Smith of Spotrac added: “The Boston Celtics announced they have signed John Tonje to a two-way contract. Tonje’s 10 Day contract with the Celtics expired today, as did the 10 Day deal for Dalano Banton. Boston will likely wait 14 days before signing further players to standard contracts.”

John Tonje’s Basketball Background

Tonje was the 53rd pick in the 2025 NBA Draft out of Wisconsin.

He has appeared in two NBA games with averages of 1.0 points and 1.0 rebounds per contest.

During his final season in college, the 24-year-old averaged 19.6 points per contest while shooting 46.5% from the field and 38.8% from three-point range in 37 games.

Jay King of The Athletic added: “As they continue to maneuver to stay out of the tax, the Celtics announced they have signed John Tonje to a two-way contract. He was a free agent after his 10-day expired. Dalano Banton’s 10-day contract has also expired. He is no longer with the team.”

The Celtics This Season

The Celtics are the second seed in the Eastern Conference with a 39-20 record in 59 games.

They have won eight out of their last ten games (and are 19-9 in 28 games at home).

Following the 76ers, the Celtics will play their next game on Monday when they visit Kyle Kuzma and the Milwaukee Bucks in Wisconsin.

After winning the 2024 NBA Championship, the Celtics are coming off a season where they lost to the New York Knicks in the second round of the 2025 playoffs.
