John Arne Riise has been flooded with support as he revealed his dad has died. The former Liverpool FC star, who played for the Reds from 2001 - 2008, took to Instagram yesterday (February 28) to share the sad news.

The retired left back shared a photo with his 300,000 followers as he held the hand of his late dad. He captioned the post: "Heartbroken. Sad. Devastated. Crying. Today my amazing dad passed away… Cancer took him quickly but he had his close family and kids around him at home until the end.

"The nicest, kindest human being I have ever been around. I love you dad and I will miss you! I will take care of the family for you." Riise's former Reds teammates were among the many to offer their condolences after the sad news.

Jamie Carragher said: "Sorry for your loss mate." Robbie Fowler added: "Aaarrrr mate... so sorry for your loss , thinking of you and all the family at this incredibly difficult time."

Luis Garcia commented: "Sorry for your loss Johny, RIP." Jerzy Dudek posted: "Our deepest condolences my friend, take care." Michael Owen said: "So sorry to hear of your loss mate."

Riise signed for the Reds in 2001 from Monaco and provided a long term answer to their left back problems. The Norwegian was a regular in the team for both Gerard Houllier and Rafael Benitez during his seven years at the club.

The 45-year-old enjoyed a glittering career with the Reds as he was part of the side that won the Champions League in 2005 and the FA Cup in 2006.

Riise also won the League Cup in 2003 and twice won the Super Cup and Community Shield. He left the Reds in 2008 to join Roma and still holds a fond place in the hearts of Reds fans.
