Report: Liverpool still want to sign 'relentless' former target and could now get him for just £22m

Liverpool reportedly retain their interest in Inter Milan right-back Denzel Dumfries after being rebuffed during the January transfer window.

The Reds were claimed to have enquired about a deal for the Dutchman late in the window after losing both Jeremie Frimpong and Conor Bradley to injury.

Inter dismissed the notion of Dumfries leaving, with the 29-year-old coming back from a three-month lay-off.

Dumfries made his return in midweek against Bodo/Glimt, and with Liverpool still hoping to reinforce their options at right-back, the Italian press have claimed that another attempt for the Netherlands international could be on the way.

Inter not protected from Dumfries exit

As TuttomercatoWeb report, Dumfries’ situation is ‘one to keep a close eye on’ this summer.

The former PSV Eindhoven full-back will reportedly see his £22m release clause come back into action throughout the month of July.

The clause ‘certainly doesn’t protect Inter’ according to TMW, given it is relatively low value for a player who has performed at a consistently high level since joining the Italians in 2021.

Other Italian outlets reported earlier in the week that Dumfries’ agent is pushing for a Premier League transfer, and putting these two stories together, it would not be a surprise to see Liverpool make their move.

On the flip side, Dumfries will be 30 in April, and although he has been a ‘relentless’ performer for Inter, there may be concerns that his most recent injury is the beginning of a downward turn.

Either way, as TMW say, this is certainly one to keep an eye on ahead of the summer.
