The 2026 NFL offseason is off to a chaotic start, with a major quarterback trade rumor gaining serious traction at the NFL Scouting Combine in Indianapolis.
Multiple reports indicate the Minnesota Vikings are preparing to move on from 2024 first-round pick J.J. McCarthy after two injury-plagued seasons that failed to deliver the expected results.

NFL Bombshell Trade Rumors Explode at Combine: Vikings Reportedly Moving On from QB J.J. McCarthy
McCarthy, selected No. 10 overall out of Michigan, missed his entire rookie campaign in 2024 due to a season-ending injury. In 2025, he made his debut but was limited to just 10 starts due to recurring health setbacks. His stat line reflected the inconsistency and struggles:
140-of-243 passing (57.6% completion)
1,632 yards
11 touchdowns
12 interceptions
Passer rating: 72.6 (among the lowest for any starting QB)
The Vikings’ decision to let veteran Sam Darnold walk in free agency after his 14-3 record in 2024 now looks even more questionable, as McCarthy has yet to prove he can be the long-term answer under center.
Insider reports suggest Minnesota is ready to “take a big swing” at quarterback this offseason, with growing internal pressure to correct what many now view as a misstep with the young QB. While McCarthy is still only 23 and has limited starts, the Vikings appear unwilling to wait for full development without competition or a proven veteran plan.

The NFL trade market is heating up, and McCarthy’s name is now firmly in the rumor mill as teams evaluate QB situations ahead of free agency (March 11) and the draft. Potential landing spots could include teams needing developmental upside or a high-ceiling backup with starting potential.
