Rumor from ESPN makes Cardinals and Packers threats for Rams free agent

While he certainly isn't at the top of the Los Angeles Rams' list of pending free agents, quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo remains an important one.

Garoppolo has been the backup to Matthew Stafford for the past two seasons and offers a strong insurance policy for the aging Stafford if he gets hurt.

ESPN's Jeremy Fowler reports the Rams want to keep Jimmy G, but he's hearing the Arizona Cardinals and Green Bay Packers will also have interest in the veteran signal-caller.

"Free agent Jimmy Garoppolo heading to Arizona is a strong option, too," he said. "The Cardinals have interest, and Mike LaFleur is considered very close with Garoppolo."

"Something to keep in mind with Garoppolo: He has one of the league's best QB2 jobs with the Rams, who would welcome him back," Fowler added. "Joining Green Bay as a No. 2 is also an option."

The Cardinals might actually be a desired landing spot for Garoppolo.

Not only does he have a connection to LaFleur, who was his offensive coordinator for two seasons, but Jimmy G would also have an opportunity to start with the Cardinals expected to release Kyler Murray.

The Packers make sense as a landing spot for Garoppolo because of the inevitable departure of backup Malik Willis, who is expected to get a starting job somewhere. Green Bay will need a replacement behind Jordan Love.

But, unlike the Cardinals, the Packers can't offer Garoppolo a starting job, so if they don't outbid the Rams, chances are he would just return to Los Angeles.
