Jermaine Pennant celebrates with team mates during his stint with Liverpool

Former English Premier League star Jermaine Pennant admitted he would love to have played for Rangers after seeing the atmosphere at Sunday’s Old Firm derby draw at Ibrox.

The former winger burst onto the scene at Arsenal, who he joined as a kid from Notts County, before moving to Liverpool where he was a runner-up in the Champions League.

Pennant also revealed last year that he snubbed Spanish giants Real Madrid during a 15-year career that saw him play for a staggering 20 different clubs.

He also had a trial with Hibs when Neil Lennon, who was in the Sky Sports studio for the big match, was in charge at Easter Road and scored in a pre-season friendly but the Edinburgh club couldn’t meet his wage demands.

And as he settled down to watch the latest instalment of the ferocious Old Firm rivalry he took to X to say: “Just watching the Old Firm derby. That atmosphere is next level.

In an interview last year, Pennant revealed how he turned down Real Madrid. He told Adventure Gamers: “This is a crazy one and many people can’t believe this, but Real Madrid wanted me back in 2010.

"It was my last year at Liverpool, I wasn’t going to sign a new contract, and things weren’t really working out between Rafa Benitez and me.

“Madrid came in needing a right-winger for their squad depth, so we had that conversation and it was exciting, but then I asked myself if I wanted to go there and sit on the bench for three years or do I want to go somewhere to be a first team starter and kick-start my career again?

"It was exciting, but I wasn’t keen at the time. Would I go back and change my decision? I wish I could!”
