Borussia Dortmund have confirmed that ex-Liverpool midfielder Emre Can has torn his anterior cruciate ligament. The 32-year-old was forced off just before half-time in the Der Klassiker defeat to Bayern Munich with the German outfit now confirming the extent of his injury.

A club statement read: "Borussia Dortmund will have to do without Emre Can for an extended period. The BVB captain suffered a torn cruciate ligament in his left knee during the Bundesliga match against FC Bayern Munich and will be sidelined for several months."

Dortmund sporting director Sebastian Kehl added: “Emre’s injury is extremely bitter. Not just for him, but for all of us. He is our captain, always puts the team first and is an important part of our club. Emre will receive all our support in the coming months so that he can make a full recovery.”

Can made 167 appearances during his four-year spell in Merseyside with three seasons under legendary manager Jurgen Klopp.

Upon leaving Liverpool in 2018, he joined Juventus before heading on loan to Dortmund 18 months later.

Can ultimately signed for the German club on a permanent deal soon after that and he has been there for the last five years.

It has not been a great week for Can with his big injury coming alongside two season-defining defeats. Just a few days before facing Bayern, Dortmund were knocked out of the Champions League with Atalanta scoring a last-minute goal to win their play-off tie 4-3 on aggregate.

Having finished in the top eight of the league standings, Liverpool had the midweek off and were awaiting their last-16 opponents. Arne Slot's side were ultimately handed a favourable draw with Galatasaray as their opponents over Atletico Madrid.

Those two European knockout ties arrive later this month with the Reds first making another trip to Turkiye before Anfield hosts the second leg.

The Premier League is priority for now with Liverpool securing a big 5-2 win over West Ham United, which was their fourth consecutive win in all competitions.

The champions have a chance to make it five on the spin on Tuesday evening as they take on bottom-of-the-table Wolves. The latest of those recent triumphs have come without Florian Wirtz due to a back injury with Slot offering an update after the win over West Ham.

He said: "I think [Tuesday] will be too early, but I said last week I didn’t expect him not to be available for today [Saturday], so sometimes with an injury things can develop in a positive/negative way.

"Now we are thinking it doesn’t have to take too long... the week after will be tight as things stand now."
