Injuries have affected the Dallas Mavericks all season long, and the situation didn’t get much better on Sunday night.

During the Mavs’ March 1 matchup against the Oklahoma City Thunder, the star guard Klay Thompson left the game with an injury.

As the second half played on, the Mavericks officially announced that Thompson would not return to the court for the remainder of the game.

Dallas Mavericks’ Klay Thompson Leaves The OKC Matchup

GettyDallas Mavericks veteran Klay Thompson suffered an injury during Sunday night’s game against the Oklahoma City Thunder. He has been ruled out for the remainder of the matchup.

When the Mavericks ruled out Thompson during the third quarter, the veteran sharpshooter had just 15 minutes played.

Thompson shot 3-8 from the field, making just one of his five shots from beyond the arc. Along with his scoring, Thompson had one assist. He turned the ball over twice.

At the moment Thompson was ruled out, the Mavericks were trailing by double-digits roughly midway through the third quarter.

The Mavericks Are In A Tough Spot

GettyKlay Thompson’s tenure with the Mavericks hasn’t gone as expected, as they have struggled to contend for an NBA Championship through the first two years. Thompson joined the Mavericks via free agency after a long run with the Golden State Warriors, where he started his career.

Dallas is having a tough season, just two years removed from winning the Western Conference Finals before coming up short in the NBA Finals.

Ahead of the 2024-2025 NBA season, Thompson signed with the Mavericks, in hopes that he could be the final piece for their championship puzzle. Instead, the old front office regime created a major shakeup, trading away Luka Doncic.

Thompson’s first full season with the Mavs included 72 games of action. He posted averages of 14.0 points, while he shot 39% from three.

This season, Thompson has played 53 games so far. He went from being a full-time starter to embracing a role off the bench at 35. Thompson is seeing the court for 22.1 minutes per game. The veteran sharpshooter is knocking down 38% of his threes, while producing 11.5 points per game.

Once again, the Mavericks don’t pose a threat as contenders in the Western Conference. Heading into Sunday’s matchup against OKC, the Mavericks held a 21-38 record. They are 21-38 on the year, placing them sixth in the Western Conference. They are a long shot to make the playoffs.

This season, Thompson is making $16.6 million. He is tied to a three-year deal in Dallas. The Mavs’ star is under contract for the 2026-2027 NBA season as well.

With Thompson exiting Sunday’s action without a return, he’s a name to keep an eye on as the league enters a new week.

Following the Mavericks-Thunder matchup on March 1, Dallas will pay a visit to the Charlotte Hornets on Tuesday, March 3. It’s unclear if Thompson will get the nod to play, as the team still has to address the severity of his setback.
