Setting the scene

Wolves start the game in 8th place and fielded a strong lineup to try and upset the favourites for the game, for Liverpool who were top of the first division table.

First Half

The game starts cautiously for both sides with Wolves having the early press looking to exploit Liverpool’s defence on the counter.

Wolves build up the pressure in the game with a cross into the Liverpool box which caused problems, but the defence was there to clear.

Wolves take the lead in the game from future Wolves player Hughes with an own goal after McCalliog attempts a shot and deflects Clemence while trying to clear the ball giving the home side Wolves the lead in the game.

The away side Liverpool responded back with an aggressive press in the game with Cormack winning possession in the midfield helping in the attack and Wolves defend it brilliantly but then go on an attack themselves with Richards who turns well and misses the goal so close for Wolves for another goal to extend the lead.

Then Liverpool gets an opportunity to equalise in the game with a cross into the box finds Toshack who heads it to Keegan squarely and he finishes it from close range got partnership play from both players involved and we are back to a level game.

The game has changed with Wolves and Liverpool trading chances at both ends of the pitch with Wolves having the best chances with Wagstaffe been involved in the build ups along with a low cross to Sunderland who does not convert and Liverpool have a chance to counter with Heighway, but his chance goes begging with Wolves continue to pressure.

With the game now in a time of end-to-end action with Shaw and Munro organising the Wolves defence and just before the final whistle Lloyd commits a foul on Richards which leads to a free kick but from the resulting one taken nothing happens and the whistle goes for half time.

Half Time: Wolves 1 Liverpool 1

Second Half

Second half starts with Liverpool dominating the possession early on looking for early shots at goal and Wolves looking at counters with Dougan and Richards with Wagstaffe getting a pass but gets intercepted.

Wolves sustained pressure in the game carries on when Dougan makes a move on goal but dragged down by Lloyd in a professional foul denying a goal scoring opportunity but only receives a yellow card for the first booking of the match and Dougan recovers from this and resumes the forward play by Wolves.

With Wolves keeping the pressure on the Liverpool goal Sunderland delivers a good ball to McCalliog who links well with Shaw, but the Liverpool defence holds firm with Smith leadership, but Wolves are scenting a goal is going to come with the vulnerability in the Liverpool defence.

The game entering its final 10 minutes with Wolves getting what could be the winner with Richard’s scoring with involvement of Shaw who was a last-minute replacement in the game allowing Richards to turn and slot home despite Liverpool appeals for offside and the home crowd goes into raptures.

After this goal conceded by Liverpool went on the push for an equaliser in the game with Keegan and Toshack both linking up but Parkes was having nothing of it keeping them out with saves keeping Wolves ahead in the game and added time had frantic play but nothing else happened and Wolves hold on for the victory.
