Goal every 85 minutes – Newcastle United and Liverpool in transfer tussle again

Luis Suarez

Lisbon, Portugal – 08 17 2025: Luis Suarez seen celebrating after scoring goal during Liga Portugal game between teams of Sporting CP and FC Arouca

Newcastle United and Liverpool are again being linked with Sporting striker Luis Suárez, with Portuguese newspaper A Bola backing up recent rumours about Premier League interest in the Colombian.

The 28-year-old has scored 33 goals this season, setting a new career high. According to A Bola, Newcastle United and Liverpool are closely monitoring the Sporting number 97 as his form continues to attract attention.

Suárez has been prolific since arriving at Sporting last summer. He has scored 29 goals in 37 appearances for the Lisbon club, adding four assists. In addition, he netted three times for Colombia, including a four-goal haul in a 6-3 win over Venezuela in September 2025 during World Cup qualifying.

That takes him to 33 goals in 40 matches overall this season. It surpasses his previous best return of 31 goals in 46 games for Almería in 2024-25.

Domestically, he leads the Portuguese Primeira Liga scoring charts with 22 goals. Suárez is also averaging a goal every 85 minutes, the best ratio among Colombian forwards to have played in Portugal’s top flight. For context, Radamel Falcao averaged one every 101 minutes, while Jackson Martínez needed 152.

He arrived at Sporting labelled as Viktor Gyökeres’ successor. However, the pressure has not shown. Instead, he has delivered consistent numbers in both domestic and European competitions, including goals against PSG in the Champions League.

Premier League interest backed by Portuguese press

Rumours linking Suárez with England have circulated in recent weeks. Now, A Bola have effectively confirmed that Newcastle United and Liverpool are paying close attention.

Crucially, this is not framed as a formal bid or negotiation. Instead, it reflects monitoring and scouting interest from both Premier League sides as they assess potential attacking reinforcements.

Suárez, for his part, played down speculation in an interview with Colombian outlet Win Sports in January. He said: “I have a five-year contract here in Portugal. I am focused on Sporting, on what is coming, an important game in the league and in the cup and, obviously, when the next stage of the Champions League arrives. Then, when it finishes, we will see what happens.”

That stance suggests no immediate movement. However, with 33 goals and the 2026 World Cup on the horizon, his stock is only rising.

What happens next for Newcastle and Liverpool

Even if it’s not a familiar face, at least it’s a familiar name for Liverpool fans. The chants would be ready if they decide to assess their forward line in the summer window. Meanwhile, Newcastle continue to seek depth and competition in attack, especially with European commitments stretching the squad.

Sporting are in a strong position. Suárez signed a five-year contract last summer, which limits pressure to sell. Any deal would likely require a significant fee, especially given his output and experience.

For now, there is no formal approach. Still, when Portuguese press start backing up Premier League rumours, it is usually a sign that the noise is more than random speculation.
