Man Utd Have Found Their 'Preferred Choice' To Replace Carrick But There's A Problem

Paris Saint-Germain head coach Lusi Enrique is the “preferred choice” of “numerous senior figures” inside Man Utd, according to reports.

The Spaniard has an extremely impressive CV, having won the Champions League at two different clubs, as well as multiple other trophies during an illustrious managerial career.

Enrique is closing in on the final year of his contract at PSG, and the Manchester Evening News claim that United see him as the best option available.

However, they also “fear” that he will put pen to paper on a new deal that will keep him at the Parc des Princes beyond 2027.

Enrique is not the only manager under consideration

Atletico Madrid boss Diego Simeone has his admirers on the board, as does former Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp, but the chances of appointing the latter have already been dismissed. The German would have no interest in moving to Old Trafford due to his past associations with the Red Devils’ North West rivals.

Carrick could still be in the frame too, but it is believed that his prospects hinge on the club securing Champions League qualification, which is not guaranteed at this stage.

When are Man Utd hoping to make an appointment?

The Manchester Evening News report that minority owner Jim Ratcliffe is aiming to have a new manager in place before the World Cup. That gives them just over three months to interview potential candidates and make a final decision.

At the bookies, Carrick remains odds-on, although some betting firms are beginning to lengthen their odds as reports about the club’s ambitious plans to appoint a high-profile manager gather momentum. Buy a Michael Carrick seat pillow cover here.

Enrique would undoubtedly be an outstanding candidate, but it does seem to be a long shot at this stage.
