Mohamed Salah’s steep decline at Liverpool this season is unique.
He played a bigger part than anyone in winning the title last term, putting down one of the best individual seasons in Premier League history.
Despite coming into this campaign a year older, most expected the Egyptian to pick up where he left off. That hasn’t happened.

Salah can’t buy a goal for Liverpool lately, and his overall play and demeanour are a shadow of the player we saw just months ago. Steve Nicol has never seen anything like this.

Nicol has been vocal about Salah’s struggles all season, and after Liverpool’s win against West Ham on Saturday, he revisited the conversation.
The former Red continues to be amazed by the fall-off. He was asked on ESPN about what he thought was behind it.

“It’s hard to argue that those aren’t two of the problems. I mean, seriously, go figure. I don’t think he could answer it. If you actually spoke to Mo Salah himself and asked him, he wouldn’t be able to tell you, right? I bet he wouldn’t.”

Salah continues to be linked away from Liverpool. If this is the level he plays at for the rest of the season, that should be an easy decision come summertime.
It’s hard to imagine that won’t hurt Liverpool’s prospects in all three competitions, though, so let’s keep some hope for a late-season resurgence from the reigning PFA Player of the Year.
Then at the end of the season, let’s see.
