'It's getting bad': Liam Rosenior offers contrasting view on Chelsea's discipline problem to Enzo Maresca

Chelsea’s disciplinary issues continue to be one of the biggest talking points of the 2025/26 season.

The Blues have received nine red cards in all competitions, including seven in the Premier League.

With 10 games to go, they are now only one more red away from equalling the all-time Premier League record.

Obviously, Liam Rosenior must prioritise fixing this problem if he wants to be successful at Stamford Bridge.

Thankfully for Chelsea, it appears Rosenior is already one step closer than Enzo Maresca was in his tenure.

Liam Rosenior admits Chelsea have discipline problem

Chelsea fans may have hoped that their disciplinary issues would disappear with Maresca’s departure.

However, after 10 games without a red following Rosenior’s arrival, Wesley Fofana and Pedro Neto have been sent off in consecutive games.

It clearly remains a concern, but at least Rosenior has publicly admitted that the players have a problem that needs addressing immediately.

“It’s a focus and a concentration thing that we need to get right. I know the record of the club is not great since the start of the season,” he explained.

“Now it’s getting bad. We had 10 games since I came in, where we didn’t have these issues, but we’ve had two in two games, so something is deep-lying that we need to get to the bottom of.”

Rosenior’s response stands out compared to Maresca’s denial after the Blues received five yellow cards against Aston Villa in December.

“Again, we need to analyse every yellow card,” Maresca said previously. “But I didn’t have the feeling [against Villa] that there was a disciplinary problem.”

It will not make Chelsea fans feel any better about the defeat to Arsenal, but they may have more faith in Rosenior to turn things around than they did in Maresca.

Hopefully, after recognising the Blues’ bad habit, the Englishman will spend the remaining weeks of the season determined to iron it out.

Liam Rosenior does not believe fines are the answer

Liam Rosenior and his coaching staff may have to think outside the box to find a solution to Chelsea’s disciplinary issues.

One reporter suggested fining the players after the Blues’ loss against Arsenal, but Rosenior was not sold on that idea.

He suggested that a fine would not be on the players’ minds when they are making reckless, split-second decisions.

“You can fine players… It’s not about punishment; it’s about finding the reason why,” Rosenior replied.

“I don’t think Pedro Neto today, or Wes Fofana last week, would’ve been thinking in that moment about, ‘If I get a red card, I’m going to get fined.'”
