Browns swing big trade with Texans for $63 million offensive tackle

The Cleveland Browns entered the 2026 offseason with two major areas of need: wide receiver and every position along the offensive line.

While the wide receiver spot is the more flashy need, the Browns desperately need to improve the offensive line. And that's what Andrew Berry did in his first move this offseason.

According to NFL Network insider Ian Rapoport, the Browns are in agreement on a trade with the Houston Texans that would send a fifth-round pick for veteran offensive tackle Tytus Howard.

"Sources: The Texans and Browns have agreed to terms on a trade to send starting RT Tytus Howard to Cleveland in exchange for a fifth-round pick," Rapoport reports.

This is a big deal for the Browns, as they are finally beginning a long process to overhaul the offensive line. Last year, the OL in Cleveland wasn't very good and dealt with injuries.

With the entire offensive line set to leave in free agency, the Browns need major work done on the group. Howard is the first of many moves.

Plus, as part of this trade for Howard, he is getting a new $63 million extension over the next three seasons. As Rapoport noted, this is $45 million in new money for the veteran tackle.

Howard was a 2019 first-round pick of the Texans, and he will be 30 years old at the start of the 0226 NFL Season. He's since started 93 games for Houston, mainly playing right tackle while getting some work at guard as well.

According to Pro Football Focus, Howard is a better pass protector than a run blocker. He's above average on pass plays, but below average in the run game.

While he might not be the best offensive lineman in the NFL, the Browns' landing Howard to be their starting right tackle for years to come by using a fifth-round pick is worth it.
