For the Miami Dolphins, answering the question about the QB position for the long term future is paramount this offseason. Whether it be a massive swing in free agency or a potential selection in this year’s draft, they have to nail down their long term future. Now, the performance of one of the more underrated stars of the NFL Combne could be turning heads within the organization.

To call a player of Drew Allar’s caliber underrated seems unfair. After all, headed into last season, Allar was viewed as a potential top 15 draft selection, with many considering him to be the best QB on the board. However, after a devastating knee injury ended a season marred by inconsistency, his draft stock rapidly declined to the point where many thought he could go un-drafted altogether.

Allar’s Combine Performance Reignites Interest

His performance in the NFL Combine though, reassured people that Allar is still a tantalizing prospect with the measurables and plus traits that NFL teams really want to see a QB. This was also his first time throwing the ball since last November, and it didn’t look like he missed a step at all.

His footwork was impeccable, his arm strength was undeniable, and most importantly, he looked natural throwing to receivers he has never worked with.

While a clear pecking order has formed in terms of QBs this year, Drew Allar may have just slotted himself into the top 5 at the position and perhaps the most appealing option available to the Dolphins in the draft as a result. While Miami has also shown some interest in Alabama QB Ty Simpson, many believe Simpson wouldn’t go as high as 11.

Weighing the Risk and Reward for Miami

While Miami could be tempted to draft Simpson later in the draft’s middle rounds, Allar could also be available as well. The Dolphins could take a very Quinn Ewers like approach as well, potentially seeing how far Allar slides and then pouncing. Still, a lot more eyes will be on the Penn State product after his combine.

The only risk is that the Dolphins would have a very young QB room. Both Ewers and Allar would not have a lot of NFL experience to their name and may need some more coaching and polish. The upside however is that the Dolphins couldn’t have asked for two more seasoned college QBs. Both Ewers and Allar spent all four seasons in college, honing their craft with elite play callers. While Hafley may be more defensive minded, getting two guys with that collegiate experience could work to his benefit.

The jury’s still out on when Allar could likely be drafted, but the Dolphins could be very patient with their decisions. While the important part of the draft is simply finding foundational pieces for the new coaching regime, they also have to be able to react to the decisions of teams around them.

Drew Allar is now firmly back on the map for several NFL teams. If the Dolphins truly like him, they may have to be more bold in their pursuit to get him.
