James Harden Gives Honest Answer on NBA Retirement Plans

At 36 years old, James Harden is still one of the top-performing guards in the NBA. This season, Harden is averaging 24.5 points, 4.8 rebounds, and 8.1 assists per game.

Although Harden is still considered a definitive starter, he is nearing retirement age. He ranks within the top 20 of the oldest active players in the NBA.

In an interview with HoopsHype's Michael Scotto, Harden shared his thoughts on retirement.

"I know it's coming soon. Hopefully, later than soon, but it's a reality. Everybody has to go through this at some point. Just trying to continue to keep my body in shape and play well. We'll see what happens in the next few years. Take one game at a time and cherish the moments."

Harden was drafted by the Oklahoma City Thunder with the No. 3 pick in the 2009 NBA Draft. He served as a key bench player for the organization, winning the Sixth Man of the Year award in 2012.

After failing to agree on a contract extension, Harden was traded to the Houston Rockets. While the Thunder limited the California native to a supporting role, he immediately became a franchise star for Houston.

Harden finished top ten in Most Valuable Player award voting from 2013 to 2020. He was named the NBA's 2018 MVP, averaging 30.4 points, 5.4 rebounds, and 8.8 assists per game.

In terms of team success, Harden led Houston to eight consecutive playoff appearances. The 11-time All-Star took the Rockets to two Western Conference Finals appearances, losing to Stephen Curry's Golden State Warriors in both matchups.

After his departure from the Rockets in 2021, Harden had brief stints with the Brooklyn Nets, Philadelphia 76ers, and Los Angeles Clippers. He had a postseason run with each team, though his productivity had decreased in comparison to his time in Houston.

Earlier this month, the six-foot-five guard was traded from the Clippers to the Cleveland Cavaliers. With the Cavaliers holding the fourth spot in the Eastern Conference standings, Harden is likely to have another chance to capture his first NBA championship.
