Chiefs Save $20 Million by Releasing Former Super Bowl Champion

The Kansas City Chiefs are entering a critical offseason after finishing the 2025–26 campaign at 6–11 and missing the postseason for the first time in a decade under head coach Andy Reid.

That has forced the organization to make several tough roster decisions, particularly from a financial standpoint. On Monday, the Chiefs informed right tackle Jawaan Taylor of his release, barring any unforeseen trade offers that could emerge before the start of the new league year on March 11.

Taylor's release will save Kansas City $20 million in cap space, according to ESPN's Adam Schefter. The move adds to a series of cost-cutting decisions, including the release of defensive end Mike Danna and the restructuring of star quarterback Patrick Mahomes' contract.

Altogether, those moves have freed up approximately $53 million in cap space after the Kansas City Chiefs entered the offseason roughly $57 million over the salary cap.

That could set up additional roster moves, with players such as tight end Noah Gray and linebacker Drue Tranquill emerging as potential release candidates. Restructuring the contracts of Chris Jones and Creed Humphrey could also be options as Kansas City continues to create financial flexibility.

Taylor, 28, had one year remaining on his $80 million contract. While the move gives the Kansas City Chiefs added financial flexibility, they will still need to find a way to replace his production along the offensive line.

As for Taylor, he is expected to become one of the more sought-after tackles available on the market this offseason.
