Jeremy Jacquet injury mystery with “thorny issue” over shoulder surgery

Jeremy Jacquet suffered a serious shoulder injury over three weeks ago and there is yet to be a decision over the incoming Liverpool defender’s potential surgery.

Jacquet was forced off with a dislocated shoulder during Rennes’ 3-1 loss to Lens on February 7 and he has not yet undergone his expected surgery.

That comes with no decision made on whether the 20-year-old would benefit more from the operation as the two clubs continue dialogue over his next steps.

As reported by Ouest France, the situation is a “thorny issue” as Liverpool and Rennes may have conflicting interests.

The French newspaper explains that “uncertainty” remains as there has been “minimal communication on Jacquet’s injury aside from Rennes coach Franck Haise saying he was “receiving treatment, undergoing rehabilitation and working in the gym.”

Jacquet shared an update from the gym on Sunday, effectively confirming there has been no progress when it comes to his surgery.

Why Liverpool may want Jeremy Jacquet to undergo surgery

Liverpool are likely to push for surgery to reduce the risk of any further issues with the centre-back’s shoulder, but Rennes know that if he does go under the knife his season will almost certainly be over.

“He may well be torn between the desire to play again for Rennes and the desire to do everything he can to successfully integrate into Liverpool,” the report claims.

It is however noted that Rennes are now improving after new coach Haise switched to a four-man defence with Anthony Rouault and Lilian Brassier at centre-back, suggesting that this may soften the blow of Jacquet’s absence.

Abdelhamid Ait Boudlal and Alidu Seidu are highlighted as other options for Rennes without their No. 97.

This is Jacquet’s second shoulder injury, having missed a month of action while at Clermont at the start of the 2024/25 campaign, and as such there will be a stronger emphasis on his recovery.

Liverpool await a final decision on their £60 million signing but they will be seeking a resolution as soon as possible.

Pre-season will begin in early July and Arne Slot will hope to have Jacquet, Giovanni Leoni and Conor Bradley all fit for the start of preparations for 2026/27.
