David Moyes insists Everton don’t set out to play any differently in their home games to their away matches. But he maintains the first season for any club at a new stadium is always difficult.

The Blues’ 3-2 triumph at Newcastle United on Saturday was their 12th Premier League success on the road since Moyes returned to the club and their seventh of the season. Only Arsenal (8) have won more away games in the 2025-26 campaign.

In contrast they have failed to taste victory at Hill Dickinson Stadium in their last seven fixtures in all competitions. The curious sequence ensures that the home team has failed to win in any of Everton’s most recent 13 matches.

And Moyes said: “I don’t really think there’s a huge expectation on us. I think we’ll just go and do what we’re doing.

“We’ve not won as many games as we’d like at home but if you wanted to reverse it and say the home fixtures had been as good as the away fixtures then we’d be extremely happy for that.

“One way or the other, we’ve got 40 points, whether that be from winning away from home or whether it be winning from home.

“You always want to try and keep your home fans really happy, but if we have to take all the points away from home and don’t do so well at home, I think you only need to look through the history books at teams who have moved to new stadiums, it’s never been that easy, certainly in the first year.”

The Blues won just five Premier League home games in 2024/25, their historic final season at Goodison Park – the joint lowest in their history along with 1957/58 – but had reached four before their most recent success, 3-0 against Sean Dyche’s Nottingham Forest, almost three months ago on December 6.

And Moyes said: “In our home games, we’ve tried to be on the front foot, be more aggressive and play better if we can. If you look at the games in the early part of the season with Jack (Grealish) playing and Ili (Ndiaye), and how we were playing in the opening part of the season, we were very, very good.

“I think since we’ve got to December, we’ve picked up the injuries, had the AFCON boys, we’ve just sort of found it difficult. If you look back, even things like the FA Cup team we had out and what we had available to us, we were really short.

“We’re beginning to get most of the players back and I think that’s making a difference. We don’t intentionally go away from home to try and play differently than we do at home.

“We want to defend really well but we also want to attack really well if we can. Probably we’ve defended really well, certainly away from home, while at home we’ve been a little bit more open.

“We’re trying to find ways of winning games. In some ways that’s cost us a little bit.”
