Speed a factor in crash

According to the Colorado State Patrol, Ponder was driving a 2023 Tesla Model 3 early on Sunday in Boulder County when he lost control of the car. Ponder hit a guardrail before sticking an electrical pole and then rolling down an embankment.

Ponder died at the scene and police stated that a preliminary investigation “shows that speed is suspected as a factor.” The investigation remains ongoing.

“The entire CU Athletics family is devastated at the tragic passing of Dominiq Ponder,” Colorado athletic director Fernando Lovo told ESPN in a statement. “He epitomized the values of passion, enthusiasm, leadership, toughness and intelligence that were revered by his teammates and coaches alike. Our hearts go out to his family and all of his teammates during this difficult time.”

The football program’s official social media account also posted a tribute, writing that the team will “honour his life, his spirit, and the light he brought to Boulder.”

What was Ponder’s role on the team?

Ponder began his college career at Bethune-Cookman University in Florida before transferring to Colorado, where he spent the past two seasons.

The native of Opa Locka, Fla., served as a backup for the Buffaloes, playing in two games last season while recording two rushes and a pass attempt.

Colorado offensive coordinator Brennan Marion reposted Sanders’ statement, adding that Ponder was a joy to be around and coach.

“A joy to be around & coach!” Marion wrote. “Gonna be tough but man this one hurts Lord, getting that call from his dad today didn’t feel real. Love you Dom! God cover his family & our team, especially our QB room!”

The Buffaloes had been slated to begin spring practice on Monday, but there is no word on whether the start of camp will be delayed after the death.
