Wolves vs. Liverpool: Predicted XI, Injury News & How to Watch

Liverpool travel to play Wolves for the first of two trips to Molineux in 72 hours. Here is everything you need to know ahead of their Premier League meeting.

With the weekend’s results moving Liverpool three points clear of sixth-place Chelsea, the Reds should be in a confident mood ahead of their Wolves encounter.

Not only do Liverpool face Wolves twice in three days, but both meetings will take place at Molineux, a ground where they have won on eight of their last 11 league visits.

Following Tuesday night’s Premier League match, Liverpool return to Wolverhampton on Friday night for an FA Cup fifth-round clash.

It will be only the seventh time ever that the Reds have played the same team away from home two games running in a single season, and the first since September 2017 against Leicester.

Florian Wirtz is still injured

Slot has explained that Wirtz won’t be available against Wolves on Tuesday and will “maybe” miss Friday’s match, too.

The coach said: “Let’s see how it ends up. We hope to have him back sometime next week; maybe a bit earlier, maybe a bit later, but that timescale.”

It sounds, therefore, like Wirtz will be back at some point next week, whether that is for Galatasaray or the Reds’ home match against Tottenham on Sunday, March 15.

Jeremie Frimpong return “really nice” during busy schedule

Frimpong made his return against West Ham after five games out due to a groin injury, with Slot saying: “Having Jeremie back is really nice, but indeed, what you are saying does go through your mind because of the fact we play three games in seven days.

“Because if we play Galatasaray, we have the early kick-off afterwards at Brighton, 12.30, so those things you have to take into account, especially with players who come back from injuries.

“But we also know the importance of every single game, and that is a challenge our staff, the player himself, and the manager has, but I’m not the only one who has that.

“I prefer to have this problem to manage, how many minutes do I have to give him, than to see him with the medical staff doing his recovery.”

Liverpool predicted XI vs. Wolves

With Slot’s comments about Frimpong in mind, it seems arguably more likely that Joe Gomez starts on Tuesday night, as the flying Dutchman waits until the FA Cup for his return to the starting lineup.

Elsewhere, we expected Liverpool to remain unchanged. If there are to be any alterations to the team that beat West Ham, it could be in the form of Andy Robertson or Curtis Jones replacing Milos Kerkez or a midfielder.

Possible Liverpool XI: Alisson; Gomez, Konate, Van Dijk, Kerkez; Gravenberch, Mac Allister; Salah, Szoboszlai, Gakpo; Ekitike

Wolves have improved… Slightly

For a team with just 13 points from 29 matches, Wolves aren’t a bad side.

In their last four games, they have beaten Grimsby in the FA Cup, drawn 2-2 at Arsenal, lost 1-0 to Crystal Palace and won 2-0 against Aston Villa.

The 18-year-old attacker, Mateus Mane, who This Is Anfield understands is subject to interest from Liverpool, has been their standout player.

His talent hasn’t been enough to help them win more than two league games this season, though, so anything less than a victory would be deemed a failure for Liverpool.

Wolves have got two men out at the moment, both strikers: Hwang Hee-Chan and Leon Chiwome.

The former has a calf problem but should return in the next couple of weeks, though isn’t expected to feature against Liverpool.

Young Chiwome is also close to a return, having missed most of the last year due to a serious ACL injury.

Possible Wolves XI: Sa; Mosquera, S. Bueno, T. Gomes; Tchatchoua, A. Gomes, J. Gomes, H. Bueno; Bellegarde, Mane, Armstrong

Liverpool are seeking their eighth league double over Wolves in nine seasons. They have won 17 of the last 18 league encounters – a run going back to January 2011.

The Reds’ only defeat in that sequence came in February 2023 when they went down 3-0 at Molineux, their biggest over Liverpool in almost 44 years.

Of the 16 players who appeared in that victory, only Jose Sa and Hee-Chan remain at Molineux.

Who is the referee for Wolves vs. Liverpool?

Tom Bramall is the referee for Wolves vs. Liverpool, with assistance coming from Gary Beswick, Adam Nunn and fourth official Adam Herczeg.

Down in Stockley Park, Tom Wood will be the video assistant referee and Wade Smith has been selected as the assistant VAR.

This will be the fourth time Bramall has taken charge of Liverpool, with the Reds having won on all three previous occasions.

The state of play

In the battle for Champions League places, a win in this game will take Liverpool above Aston Villa for 24 hours at least, albeit on goal difference.

Liverpool’s top-five qualification rivals are also in action this midweek, Newcastle hosting Man United and Villa hosting Chelsea on Wednesday, while Brentford visit Bournemouth on Tuesday.

Goal difference looks like it could well be a factor, so if the game is wrapped up early, the Reds should look to maximise their time against the league’s bottom side.
