Adam Schefter, Ian Rapoport both got David Montgomery trade details wrong in rush to be 1st

You can usually tell when ESPN's Adam Schefter and NFL Network's Ian Rapoport get their information from the same source.

That was pretty clearly the case on Monday, when they tweeted out the news of the David Montgomery trade from the Lions to the Texans within seconds of each other, and they both got details of the deal wrong.

Original posts from Rapoport (who was first, barely) and Schefter on X wrote that the Texans were sending a fifth-round pick to the Lions for Montgomery.

Seemed reasonable enough, except that's not the deal.

They both came back a few minutes later to clarify. It's not a fifth-rounder.

It's a fourth-rounder, and a seventh-rounder, and offensive lineman Juice Scruggs. Three assets, not one, including another player.

That seems less than ideal, but it's how it happened for two guys expected to be first on every bit of NFL news.

Potentially, the information they received referred to the return as a "fifth-round value" or something like that.

Because it's their whole brand to win the race to be first, they went with it.

Potentially, the follow-up info came without them even asking for it. Or the source saw their posts and realized there was a slight misunderstanding.

Either way, it's not a big deal in this case. It's just an NFL trade, and it's happening regardless of how right or wrong Schefter and Rapoport are.

It does show the risks in the game they play, though.

Sometimes, the rush can lead to the wrong information. It's one of those things you have to hope doesn't happen with something more serious.
