Arne Slot’s chance at history this week & Florian Wirtz return timeline – Latest LFC News

Arne Slot could write his name in Liverpool’s history books this week, but he will have to do it without Florian Wirtz as he remains sidelined with a back injury.

Arne Slot’s chance to have most Liverpool wins in first 100 games

Slot has been under constant pressure this season with mixed results accompanied by inconsistent performances, though the ship has been steadied again of late.

He is nearing his 100th game in charge, and should he oversee two successive wins over Wolves this week, he will have won the most matches in his first century of games of any Reds manager.

Sir Kenny Dalglish currently holds the record with 62 wins from his first 100, while Slot has 61 from 97 games.

Dalglish also won the title in his first season as a player-manager in 1985/86, and ended his second season without a major title.

There is still hope Slot can guide Liverpool to FA Cup or Champions League success this season, and the potential for that will be in part decided by their results this month.

• Florian Wirtz remains unavailable for Tuesday’s trip to Wolves with a back issue, with Slot conceding that he is only likely to return against Galatasaray next week

• Slot has said what many of us are thinking, that he no longer enjoys watching most Premier League games as it’s simply who can score more set-pieces. Take us back to 2017!

• The Reds are claimed to have ‘not played ball’ with Aston Villa when it came to renegotiating **Harvey Elliott**‘s deal – they all agreed in the summer, sorry, that’s on Villa

• Liverpool loanee Luca Stephenson had the honour of captaining Dundee United over the weekend. He’s only 22 and is a temporary signing, quite the feat!

• Julian Naglesmann has explained that Ryan Gravenberch struggled under his watch at Bayern Munich because he’s not a player designed to be an impact sub, saying he’s now “world-class” thanks to regular minutes at Liverpool (GFNG)

Wolves View: Expect strong XIs in double-header

Liverpool face Wolves twice in three days this week, and ahead of the double-header we got the view from Molineux about what we can expect and why they have little to lose on Tuesday:

“Realistically, the FA Cup game has to be Wolves‘ priority.

“But I got a little bit too excited after the win over Villa and am looking at any potential routes for a great escape!

“A win in the league would be unbelievable, but really, survival looks slim, so a cup run would probably be preferred.”

• Most members of **Tottenham**‘s squad have clauses in their contract that include mandatory salary reductions of around 50 percent if the club are relegated. Wild that’s even a headline (David Ornstein, The Athletic)

• Jose Mourinho has said Gianluca Prestianni’s Benfica career will be “over” if he is found guilty of racially abusing Vinicius Jr. About time Jose took a proper leader’s stance on the issue

• Former Liverpool midfielder Emre Can will miss the rest of the season after tearing his ACL over the weekend. His contract expires in the summer, surely Dortmund offer an extension to their captain (BVB)

• The Premier League has deleted a social media post of Tottenham goalkeeper Guglielmo Vicario sending a free-kick out of play, with Spurs rightly noting official channels should not mock its own players. This ‘viral’ era is painful (BBC)

Liverpool FC: On this day

Another week, another League Cup win to remember!

It was on March 2, 2003 that Liverpool beat Man United 2-0 in the Worthington Cup final at the Millennium Stadium.

This was the only time the teams have met in a cup final since Liverpool’s 1996 FA Cup loss, when the Reds turned up in white suits.

Thankfully, Liverpool got their own back six years later thanks to a first-half deflected strike from Steven Gerrard and an 86th-minute clincher from Michael Owen.
